Vedic Mathematics Seminar on 12th April, 2009

We at FireUp are glad to announce that we are conducting Vedic Mathematics Seminar on 12th April, 2009.

In the month of February and March, 2009 we successfully conducted seminars on Vedic Mathematics in Pretoria High School, Hare school and Sakhawat Memorial Higher Secondary Girls’ School.

What is Vedic Mathematics?

Vedic mathematics - a gift given to this world by the ancient sages of India. “Vedic Mathematics” refers to a technique of calculation based on a set of 16 Sutras or algorithms derived from these sutras. The evasive problems or the time consuming huge sums can often be solved quickly and without any mistakes by using the Vedic method.

How it will help you?

Vedic Mathematics helps you to solve mathematical problems about 15 times faster. It will not only help you to score high grades in your school examinations and will also be effective for competitive examinations as well. It can even help the mathematics teacher to make the student learn this gift (sutras in vedas) from Indian Sages. It is proven that any mathematical problem can be solved mentally with these sutras.

Squaring Shortcuts

A Simple Method

To apply this method you should know squares of 1 to 25 by heart

For squaring any number from 26 to 75

Step 1. Find the difference between 50 and the number you want to square.

If the number to be squared is greater than 50

Step 2. Add that many 100s to 2500 (which is the square of 50)

Step 3. Then add the square of the difference to the result of step 1

If the number is less than 50

Step 2. Subtract that many 100s to 2500.

Step 3. Then add the square of the difference to the result of step 1

Few examples:

Square of 67

This number is greater than 50.

Step 1. Difference of 67 and 50 = 67-50 = 17

Step 2. Add 1700 to 2500 = 4200
Step 3. Add square of 17 to step 2.

Answer = 4200+ 289 = 4489

Different representation of the above example:
Since, 67-50 = 17

672
= 25 + 17 | (17)2
= 42 | 289
= 4489

The logic for above method is

67  67 = (50 + 17)2= 2500 + 25017 + 172 = 2500 + 1700 + 289 = 4489

Or

47  47 = (50 – 3)2 = 2500 - 2503 + 32 = 2209

For squaring any number between 75 to 125

Step 1. Find the difference between 100 and the number you want to square.

Case (i): If the number to be squared is greater than 100
Step 2. Add double of that many 100s to 10000 (which is the square of 100)
Step 3. Then add the square of the difference to the result of step 1

Example

Square of 113
This number is greater than 100.
Step 1. Difference of 113 and 100 = 113-100 = 13
Step 2. Add 2600 (which is double of 13×100) to 10000 = 12600
Step 3. Add square of 13 to step 2.

Answer = 12769

Case (ii): If the number is less than 100
Step 2. Subtract double of that many 100s to 10000.
Step 3. Then add the square of the difference to the result of step 1

Logic behind the above technique: (a+b) 2 = a2+2ab+b2
For a number close to 50, say 57, we add 7 hundreds to 2500 because it is in the form (50+7)2= 502+2×50×7+72 = 2500+7×100+49 =3249

Same logic can be applied for any number. For example to find the square of 897, it will be in the form (900-3)2= 9002-2×900×3+32 = 810000-5400+9 = 804609

With some practice you can do such calculations in your mind.

Test yourself
Find out the square of 119, 307, 411, and 789?
Answer: 14161, 94249, 168921, 622521

There are lot of other methods for Squaring which are extremely useful

Launch Of A Revolutionary CAT Coaching Portal(fireup)

The country’s six Indian Institutes of Management’s Admission Group have decided to make their Common Admission Test (CAT) online from next year, and an alumni of IIM Indore has already geared up for the challenge with his venture fireup.co.in. Vineet Patawari, founder of fireup.co.in, a qualified Chartered Accountant and an alumnus of the Post-Graduate Diploma in Business Management, IIM Indore, who rejected a package of INR 14.5 lakhs from JPMC in 2008 to follow his heart. He is supported in this venture by his partner and creative head, Shreshtha Jha. fireup.co.in, which was formally launched at Oxford book store, Kolkata, on 18th December 2008 provides all the facilities for a CAT taker under one banner and includes features like blog, videos, forum, chat, common room and knowledge management. fireup.co.in claims to train an individual right from the initial CAT preparation to the ultimate challenge of clearing group discussions and interviews thereby securing a seat in the most coveted institutions through its unique courseware and methodology. Though fireup.co.in is primarily an online education venture, some of its modules are also available in CDs also at leading stores. Asked about what initiated him to start an online CAT coaching site, Patawari said that the logistics of the admission examination was becoming a nightmare, due to the growing number of aspirants every year. “It was soon becoming imperative for the exam to go online some day,” he added. The online examination would be much easier to manage than the current system, Jha said. An IIM-A source confirmed that the online examination would cut down administrative costs, involving people travelling to places, and sending papers all over the country, with risks of leaks. The conventional examination can be conducted from a limited number centers while the online tests can be taken from anywhere. Here is a glimpse of fireup's press release.

THE FREEDOM OF STUDYING AT YOUR OWN FREE TIME:

E-learning programs or online coaching programs have just emerged and this is a totally new concept in the education scenario, at least in countries like India. The offline i.e. classroom based teaching or a tutor at home also helps you to prepare for the competitive examinations. But in respect to today’s fast moving world we also need to keep ourselves updated with the cutting edge technologies.

For a country like India the competition in various entrance examinations is very tough. For example more than 3 lakh students are expected to appear for CAT 2009. CAT is the entrance examination for the coveted management institutes like IIMs. Many other reputed institutes like MDI, IMT, SP Jain, etc. also accept CAT score. There are many classrooms coaching institute to help students appearing for CAT. Recently a young IIM alumnus and a Professor at reputed St.Xavier’s College Kolkata, Vineet Patawari has come up with an online coaching portal for CAT in the name of www.fireup.co.in.The timing of the launch of such a portal is most appropriate as CAT is going online from 2009

After going through the website and comparing it with various other in the same domain I realized e-learning, specially for competitive examinations is more efficient learning tool as compared to the classroom tutorials in many ways.

Firstly, you save the time and energy spend to attend the classroom coaching. You can log into www.fireup.co.in or any other similar website, whenever you want to get yourself started. There is no time barrier or timing schedule for the classes.

Secondly, many CAT aspirants are professionals who have a busy daily schedule with very little time to attend classes for such preparation purposes. Online mode of preparation becomes a boon to such people who want to pursue higher education keeping their professional life intact.

Many people prefer a calm and homely atmosphere while studying. This makes them uncomfortable in tuition centers and thus they cannot concentrate on their study. Online mode of education helps you to prepare as per your convenience.

In brief it is Any Time, Any Where, Any Pace Learning.

People usually have some social commitments too. Online study also provides the time for meeting their social obligations simply because they do not have to rush to coaching classes. Family men also find it easy since they do not have to adjust their time for meeting family commitments.

Additional information on a particular subject can also be browsed through net which are not normally made available under classroom conditions.

Of course traditional campus education will never be dispensed with; sill there has been remarkable increase in the number of students preferring online courses in recent years. Apart from the specific advantages students get the chance to master the skill for dealing through net which is considered as essential under modern working conditions. Moreover facilities like 24*7 virtual coach provided by fireup.co.in are a boon for CAT takers.

Condition of divisibility

Conditions of Divisibility

1. x n + a n is exactly divisible by (x + a) only when n is odd. e.g. x7 + y7 is exactly divisible by x + y.

2. x n + a n is not exactly divisible by (x + a) when n is even.

E.g. x10 + y10 is not exactly divisible by x + y.

3. x n + an is never divisible by (x - a).

E.g. a 7 + b 7 or a14 + b14 are not divisible by a-b.

4. x n – a n is exactly divisible by x + a when n is even.

E.g. x6 - a6 is exactly divisible by x + a

5. x n – a n is exactly divisible by x - a (whether n is odd or even).

E.g. x9 - a9 and x12 - a12 are exactly divisible by x-a.

Example 1: The expression 82n – 33n has a factor

1)11 2)5 3)37 4)91 5) None of these

Solution: 82n – 33n = (8 2)n - (33)n = (64)n - (27)n

As we don't know about n, by the condition (5),

(64 - 27) is a factor,

37 is a factor of 8 2n – 3 3n

Example 2: The last digit in the expansion of (41)n - 1 when n is any positive integer is

1)2 2) 1 3)0 4)-1 5) None of these

Solution: The last digit in the (41)n for any value of n is 1. Thus, the last Digit in (41) n - 1 is 0.

Or,(41 - 1) is a factor or exact divisor of 41n – 1n for any positive integer n.

Now, when 41 - 1 = 40 is a factor

The last digit in the expansion should be 0.

Example 3: Find the last two digits of the expansion of 212n - 64n when n is any positive integer.

solution: (26)2n - (62)2n = (64)2n - (36)2n

Since 2n is an even integer, the above expression must be divisible by (64 + 36) {By condition (4)}

64 + 36 = 100 is the factor of the above expression.

Last two digits of its expansion must be 00.

Example 4: For all integral values of n, the expression 73n - 24n is a multiple of

1)5 2)9 3) 327 4) 359 5)224

Solution: 73n – 24n = (73)n - (24) n = (343)n - (16)n

By the condition (5)

343 - 16 = 327 is a factor of the expression 7 3n – 2 4n.

Example: What should be added to 27x3 - 9x2 - 6x - 5 to make it exactly divisible by (3x – 1)?

We have, 3x - 1 = 0

x = 1/3

Thus, the remainder is

f (1/3) = 27(1/3)3 - 9(1/3)2 - 6(1/3) - 5

= 1-1 - 2 -5 = -7

If we add 7 to the given expression, the expression will be exactly divisible by the given divisor.
